In the AI for Teachers Facebook group, Richard Noble shared the following:

Is it unethical for teachers to use artificial intelligence to grade papers if they have forbidden their students from using it for their assignments? That was the question a teacher asked Kwame Anthony Appiah in a recent edition of The Ethicist. We posed it to students to get their take on the debate, and asked them their thoughts on teachers using A.I. in general. While our Student Opinion questions are usually reserved for teenagers, we also heard from a few educators about how they are — or aren’t — using A.I. in the classroom. We’ve included some of their answers, as well. source

I decided to run it through ETHICAL model to see what would come up. I also explored my personal opinion and ran that through as well.

My personal opinion?

AI has built-in bias as shown by research…it is not impersonal and has its own issues as a result. Still, it can provide some support as a teacher’s thought partner and efficiency assistant.

Since teaching is a job, it is about maximizing productivity to get work done. Use AI or whatever to get that job done.

Since student effort and work is about learning, AI is not useful for productivity unless the learning has taken place. Productive struggle is necessary so students learn.

For teachers, it is not unless it is a work task the teacher needs to learn from.
